One for One Bike-a-Thon
On Sunday, April 20th, 2008 about 100 children from Hartford's North End pedaled their way around Keney Park to raise money for an international effort aimed at slowing the spread of the AIDS virus.  With the help of donated and borrowed bicycles, youth from John C. Clark Elementary School, the Kelvin D. Anderson Center, and the Hartford Catholic Worker House rode in the One for One Bike-a-Thon.  The money raised went to Safe Blood for Africa - One Million Lives Initiative and will be used to purchase blood testing kits for African villages, hospitals, and health care facilities to help avoid the passing of HIV contaminated blood.

Why the One Million Lives Initiative?
In the fall of 2007, former UCONN student-athlete Emeka Okafor gave a substantial gift to the Husky Sport program. With this gift, the program is providing additional visits with more students and staff than ever before.  In visiting three sites in the North End of Hartford six days a week, the program serves as a consistent influence in the lives of both the Hartford youth and the college students.  As a token of the program's appreciation for Okafor's gift, Husky Sport is planning this event with the help of the Hartford children and community as well as UCONN staff and students. All of the money raised will go to the Safe Blood for Africa-One Million Lives Initiative, for which Okafor is the spokesperson.

This event was organized by University of Connecticut students involved in Husky Sport, a service learning program offered by the Neag School of Education.
