CT Academic Skills Assessments for Applicants to Teacher Preparation Programs: Praxis I

Who Must Meet The Academic Skills Requirement?

Connecticut law mandates a series of assessments to assure that each prospective teacher has essential skills in reading, writing, and mathematics, subject knowledge competence, and professional knowledge competence.

Individuals seeking formal admission to a Connecticut teacher preparation program, or seeking certification in Connecticut, must fulfill the academic skills requirement:

1. By taking and passing all three PRAXIS I Academic Skill Assessments in reading, writing and mathematics, OR

2. By qualifying for and obtaining a Praxis I waiver. If you are eligible for the Praxis I Waiver, you do not need to take the Praxis I Academic Skill Assessments. To determine if you are eligible for the Praxis I Waiver, click here.

Praxis 1 Academic Skills Assessments Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST)

Educational Testing Service's (ETS) Praxis I Academic Skills Assessments Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST) is Connecticut's required test for entry into a teacher preparation program. Either the computer-based or paper-based Praxis I PPST is acceptable.

Either the computer-based or paper-based Praxis I PPST is acceptable. Students should plan to take the test by the summer prior to their sophomore year; this allows time to retake a section of the test, if necessary. We must receive the score report from ETS by the application deadline!

Paper-based tests:

Passing scores are required on each of the three discrete tests:

Reading (Test #0710; Passing Score = 172)

Writing (Test #0720; Passing Score = 171)

Mathematics (Test #0730; Passing Score = 171)

Score reports for paper-based tests are mailed four weeks after the test date. Allow 7–10 days for paper score reports to arrive after they are mailed.

Computer-Based Tests (CBTs):

Passing scores are required on each of the three discrete tests:

Reading (Test #5710; Passing Score = 172)

Writing (Test #5720; Passing Score = 171)

Mathematics (Test #5730; Passing Score = 171)

Score reports for computer-based tests are mailed two to three weeks after your individual test date. Allow 7–10 days for paper score reports to arrive after they are mailed.

RECIPIENT CODE: When you take the PPST, include the University of Connecticut as a score recipient; UConn's recipient code is 3915. If you did not include UConn as a score recipient, you must contact ETS and have them mail an official copy of your score report to the Neag School of Education Admissions Office, 249 Glenbrook Road, Unit 2064, Storrs, CT 06269-2064.

REGISTRATION: Praxis registration information, including test sites and dates, is available online: www.ets.org or you may call ETS at 609.771.7395. Study tips and practice tests are also available on the ETS website.
