Joan M. McGuire
Professor Emerita
Senior Research Scholar, Associate Director, Center on Postsecondary Education and Disability


Dr. Joan M. McGuire is a Professor Emerita, Senior Research Scholar and Associate Director of the Center on Postsecondary Education and Disability, a University recognized Center of Excellence. She is the recipient of the University’s AAUP Excellence Award for Teaching Mentorship, the Council for Exceptional Children Division for Career Development and Transition's Oliver P. Kolstoe Award presented to an individual who has made a significant contribution to the field of career development and transition through means other than direct classroom instruction, and the inaugural Communication Award from the Association on Higher Education and Disability (AHEAD) for commitment to scholarship in the development of the profession of postsecondary disability services. Dr. McGuire has coauthored two books on postsecondary education for students with learning disabilities and has more than 80 published refereed journal articles and book chapters in the fields of postsecondary education for students with learning disabilities and Universal Design for Instruction (UDI). She has presented over 150 papers at international, national, and state professional conferences. In addition to serving as the Director of the University of Connecticut Program for College Students with Learning Disabilities (1986-2000), she has authored and co-authored proposals resulting in more than $4.8 million in federal and state grants including $3 million for demonstration projects focusing on Universal Design for Instruction (UDI). Dr. McGuire was the Co-Editor of the Journal on Postsecondary Education and Disability and currently serves on the editorial boards of three peer reviewed professional journals. Her current research interests include inclusive instructional strategies for teaching diverse college students based upon Universal Design for Instruction, postsecondary disability program development, administration, and evaluation; adults with learning disabilities including outcomes of postsecondary education and employment data; and formative and summative evaluation of programs and projects such as postsecondary disability services and UDI including impact analysis.
