Jennifer E. Bruening
Associate Professor

Dr. Jennifer E. Bruening earned her B.A. in English from the University of Notre Dame (1992), her M.A. in English from Morehead State University (1994), and her PhD from The Ohio State University (2000). Bruening spent four years as collegiate student-athlete playing volleyball at the University of Notre Dame. She spent eight years as an athletic administrator and volleyball coach at Kenyon College in Ohio, including two years as athletic director. She has been a part of the Sport Management program at the University of Connecticut since January of 2002 and serves as the Director of the Laboratory for Sport Management. She is also a research fellow with Northeastern University's Center for the Study of Sport in Society. Dr. Bruening’s research line has focused primarily on the barriers and supports for women and minorities in sport. Dr. Bruening is also the program founder and director for Husky Sport receiving funding from the USDA and the City of Hartford. Husky Sport has both a program and a research component. The program provides mentors (UCONN students) as planners of sessions at a recreation center, an elementary school, and a neighborhood Saturday program that emphasize exposure and access to sport and physical activity, and advocates good nutrition and healthy lifestyles. Research has focused specifically on the impact of such a program on pre-adolescent females and the impact of involvement in such a program on the college student mentors.
