Teacher Certification Program for College Graduates (TCPCG)
The Neag School of Education TCPCG shares with the Integrated Bachelor’s and Master’s (IB/M) program these strong commitments:
• High standards
• Extensive clinical experience
• Concern for the development of reflective
and analytical practitioners
• Urban and multicultural issues in education
• Teacher Leadership
Like the Storrs-based Integrated Bachelor's/Master's program, the TCPCG is dedicated to preparing teachers who
share a life-long commitment to students, to public education, and to ongoing professional development.
The program is currently being offered at the Greater Hartford Regional Campus, with plans to offer it at the Waterbury Regional Campus starting May 2008 (pending approval).
TCPCG students enter the program after obtaining a bachelor's degree in an appropriate area. Their ages and
work experiences represent a wide spectrum, but their common goal is to attain a Masters Degree in education
and the certification to teach in Connecticut public schools. The TCPCG program is focused on preparing
teachers for the following certification areas:
• English (7-12)
• History/Social Studies (7-12)
• Science (7-12)
• Mathematics (7-12)
• World Languages (7-12)
• Special Education (K-12)
• Agriculture Education (K- 12)
The TCPCG program consists of a four-semester, 45-hour certification program, beginning with two Summer sessions, and
continuing through the following academic year. The program is designed as a full-time Master's degree program.
The curriculum of the program is based on the integration of three areas of preparation:
•
Core courses involving pedagogy and related matters,
• Two successful clinical experiences
• Full-time student teaching for 12 weeks in the
fall semester
A 10-week problem-based inquiry project with part-time additional classroom experience
• Seminars designed to provide a context in which clinical experiences are related to university coursework.
