Neag School of Education Teacher Education Integrated Bachelor's/Master's Program

The Integrated Bachelor's/Master's
Teacher Education Program

Special Education

The IB/M teacher certification program for students seeking Comprehensive Special Education certification (Grades K-12) in Connecticut is a three-year program combining the junior and senior years with a mandatory fifth year. By the end of the program and the completion of all requirements, the student has received both a bachelor's degree and a master's degree, and is eligible for the University of Connecticut's recommendation for certification in Connecticut.

In addition to the teacher preparation curriculum, students in Comprehensive Special Education are required to complete a subject area major in English, Mathematics, or Science, as well as a concentration in a second related area, which can include the Humanities, the Social Sciences, Mathematics, or Science. The subject area major includes a minimum of 39 credits (24 in the subject area major, and 15 distributed among the related areas). For more details, see the Subject Area Requirements and Sample Semester Sequence for Comprehensive Special Education . In addition to coursework, students in Special Education complete five school-based clinic placements: two junior year placements, two senior year placements including student teaching, and a fifth year internship.

Admission to the IB/M program is specific to a particular certification area. Under normal circumstances, students are not able to change their primary certification area once admitted to the program.

For additional information or questions about the Comprehensive Special Education program, please contact one of the faculty advisors for Special Education.
