The Neag School of Education offers two programs leading to teacher certification
• Integrated Bachelor's/Master's (IB/M) Teacher
Preparation Program
• Teacher Certification Program for College Graduates
The IB/M Teacher Preparation Program is a highly competitive five-year comprehensive teacher preparation
program that integrates coursework and school-based clinic experiences facilitated by university and K-12 faculty
in the preparation of pre-service teachers. Based on principles established by the
Holmes Partnership and the work of John Goodlad and his
colleagues at the National Network of Educational Renewal,
the IB/M Teacher Preparation Program was established to prepare preservice teachers to meet the needs of all
students in all types of learning environments.
Over the past few years, U.S. News & World Report has ranked the IB/M program among the top 25 teacher
preparation programs in Elementary Education, Secondary Education, and Special Education. We are nationally
accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education as well as the Connecticut State Board of Education. Further, certification through the IB/M program is recognized
by forty states through the National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education & Certification
Interstate Contract.
Building on the existing strengths of the IB/M Teacher Preparation Program the Neag School of Education
developed the Teacher Certification Program for College Graduates (TCPCG) for college graduates who wish to gain teacher
certification. The TCPCG program, offered on the Greater Hartford and Waterbury campuses, shares with the IB/M program
a strong commitment to high standards, extensive clinical experience, and a concern for the development of
reflective and analytic practitioners, for urban and multicultural issues in education, and for teacher
leadership.
