Neag School of Education University Program for College Students with Learning Disabilities

ANNOUNCEMENT

Currently, the University of Connecticut has two programs on campus responsible for providing appropriate accommodations for students with disabilities - the Center for Students with Disabilities (CSD) and the University Program for College Students with Learning Disabilities (UPLD). As of June 1, 2008, these two programs will consolidate into one office in order to provide accommodations and services to all students with disabilities.

So What Does This Mean for the Current Academic Year??

  • For the remainder of the 2007-2008 academic year, the CSD and UPLD will continue to maintain two offices:
    • CSD - Wilbur Cross, Room 201
    • UPLD - Gentry, Room 003
  • Current students should continue to follow the same procedure for requesting accommodations.
  • Prospective or entering students should contact the CSD at 860-486-2020. Students will be asked to provide some brief background information regarding their disability and to submit appropriate documentation. Once this information is reviewed, you will be contacted by a CSD or UPLD professional in order to discuss your request for accommodations.

The UPLD staff works closely with University administration, faculty and graduate student instructors, the Center for Students with Disabilities, other staff members, and students to provide reasonable accommodations and services to UConn students with learning disabilities (LD). UPLD also serves as a training facility for pre-professional graduate students from a variety of disciplines and a research site for issues related to postsecondary students with LD. We hope this website serves as a useful resource to our many colleagues and consumers.

Students - Whether you are thinking about attending UConn, have just begun here, or are a returning student, the staff and I at UPLD welcome you! Our university offers tremendous opportunities to stretch yourself intellectually and emotionally while developing the knowledge and skills needed for a rewarding career. At UPLD, we respect the fact that university students with learning disabilities (LD) are often some of the brightest and most dedicated learners on campus. The Learning Specialists and I look forward to offering you a caring and confidential environment at UPLD. You can discuss your successes and frustrations with trained staff members who understand the unique challenges (and triumphs) that college students with LD experience. We are committed to helping you accommodate the impact of your learning disability and develop new tools for achieving academic success at UConn.

 Sherine A. Miller, M.A.
 Director, UPLD
