Measurement, Evaluation, and Assessment

The Master's Degree Program

STRUCTURE OF THE MASTER'S PROGRAM

Students enrolled in the master's program will be expected to complete 33 credits of coursework and complete a thesis/project. The master's program within MEA follows Plan B of the university's guidelines.

Course requirements : 11 courses minimum including required courses.

Required courses : The required courses (three credits each) are:

EPSY 309 Quantitative Methods in Research I
EPSY 313 Quantitative Methods in Research II
EPSY 341 Principles and Methods in Educational Research
EPSY 342 Educational Tests and Measurements
EPSY 344 Construction of Evaluation Instruments
EPSY 347 Methods of Inquiry or approved substitute for Qualitative Research
EPSY 405 Program Evaluation

     

III. Elective courses : Normally four or more additional courses which could be in MEA or in an area of application. All master's students must complete at least one theory course in a substantive area related to their professional focus (e.g., EPSY 335, EPSY 331, HDFS 315, PSYC 386). Choices of electives are made with the approval of the candidate's advisor. Examples of elective courses (3 credits each) include:

EPSY 311 Workshop in Education (topics vary within MEA)
EPSY 335 Learning: Its Implications for Education
EPSY 331 Developmental Foundations of Exceptionality
EPSY 346 Multivariate Analysis in Educational Research
HDFS 315 Models and Concepts of Lifespan Human Development
PSYC 386 Social Cognition
EPSY 345 Computer Methods in Education Research
EPSY 406 Sampling Designs and Survey Research Methods in Education
EPSY 436   Measurement Theory and Application
EPSY 437 Item Response Theory

 

IV. Thesis/examination requirements : Successful completion of a research project or thesis is required. The student's advisory committee may recommend oral defense of the project/thesis.

V. Plan of Study : To be filled out by the candidate with the guidance of his/her advisor and approval of his/her committee. Copies are to be placed in both Department and Graduate School files.
