    Cindy Bushey   [e-mail]
    Ph.D. in Cognition & Instruction

    Started: Fall 2007

    Research Interests:
My interests are evolving, but I believe there should be systemic use of problem based learning in K-12 education. As I begin to explore the complex issues related to PBL in public schools, I am drawn to the notion that fear of the unknown may prohibit its use by teachers. Currently, I am investigating the concept of the Professional Learning Community (PLC) through a qualitative research study that is investigating the development of a PLC in a Massachusetts middle school. I suspect my interests are related in that the collaboration of teachers in Professional Learning Communities may offer a key to unlocking teachers’ fear of engaging in PBL with their students.

    Professional Background:
Before starting at UConn, my experiences included working with staffs of resident assistants as a residence hall director, teaching fifth grade as a classroom teacher, and several other teaching and tutoring experiences. In addition, I acted as general contractor while our home was built—the biggest problem-based learning I’ve experienced to date! My combined experiences, as well as watching my three children develop and learn, have challenged me to consider the factors contributing to effective teaching and learning.

    Graduate Assistantship Info:
I am currently a graduate assistant in the Cognition & Instruction program.
