Neag School of Education Department of Educational Psychology Cognition and Instruction

Cognition and Instruction

How do people think and learn and how can an understanding of cognition be put into practice to design learning and literacy environments? This is the central concern of the Cognition and Instruction program. The Department of Educational Psychology at the University of Connecticut (UConn) sponsors Doctoral, Master's degrees, and a Sixth Year certificate, in Cognition and Instruction. The graduate programs focus on applying theory and research on learning, thinking, literacy and teaching, to instructional practice for learners of all ages. Core courses focus on research methods, perception, learning, cognition, cognitive development, research methods, instructional theories and models derived from cognitive science.

Research conducted by the Cognition and Instruction program is supported by the Neag School's Office of Technology and the Collaborative Technology Center with networked computers, a wireless environment, multimedia development capabilities, and support technology for research and instructional development (see http://www.education.uconn.edu/technology).
