Human Performance Laboratory
Exercise Physiology Laboratory
The Exercise Physiology laboratory consists of a 1,580 square foot space, including separate rooms and areas dedicated for different laboratory analyses. The laboratory contrains a refrigerator/freezer, sink, a blood processing area with a centrifuge and an autoclave for instrument sterilization, two treatment couches, and two phlebotomy chairs. A Quinton treadmill, Monark cycle ergometers, and two Wingate ergometers are used for standard exercise testing. This equipment is supported by two MedGraphics metabolic carts for indirect calorimetry.
The laboratory also includes a separate work room with four on-line PC computers for data base entry, management and statistical analyses. A nutritional work area is used for food and supplement storage and preparation of supplements. An additional kitchen on the office level is also used for more detailed nutritional preparation for studies. In addition, a video and cable TV set up is available for long-term sampling scenarios and laboratory stays short of a metabolic ward requirement.
Our ultrasound equipment enables us to examine measures such as brachial artery reach, tendon length, and aspects of muscle. The body composition labs in the HPL has state of the art equipment available for the measurement of body composition and bone mineral density. There are two separate 300 sq ft. laboratory areas within the HPL. One is dedicated for underwater weighing, Xitron bioelectric impedance and a Dew-point sweat analyzer. The other area has a DEXA (Prodigy , Lunar Corporation, Madison, WI).
