Exercise Science
Exercise Science is the scientific study of exercise and sport. As a discipline, exercise science is rooted in the physical and life sciences, including chemistry, biology, and physics. Exercise scientists observe the effects of exercise and exercise training on the body, and they teach athletes to improve their performance and fitness.
The Department of Kinesiology offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in exercise science, including an undergraduate degree in strength and conditioning which can lead to certification by the National Strength and Conditioning Association. These programs, depending on the extent of your education, could to any of the following professions: exercise specialist, strength and conditioning specialist, personal trainer, laboratory technician, or exercise scientist.
In our Human Performance Laboratory, research methodologies and sophisticated technologies are used to study important questions dealing with physiology, biochemistry, nutrition, medicine, and biomechanics. When necessary, animal studies are conducted to help examine complex physiological mechanisms that cannot be studied easily in humans.
