Executive Leadership Program
Program Structure
The program consists of 15 credits (four [4] three-credit courses and a three-credit internship) over
a one-year period. The program begins with a one-week summer institute. During the fall and spring semesters,
courses generally meet on three Saturdays, plus two weekday sessions from 2:00 – 9:00 p.m. approximately
once every third week. Fall and spring class meetings will be augmented through web-based discussions, field
trips, guest speakers, and attendance at superintendent professional development meetings. The program follows
a cohort model, ensuring the highest level of collaboration and continuity. Depending on cohort membership each
year, sessions are held in the Hartford/Stamford area.
Each course is delivered through a balance of academic and practitioner perspectives and will conclude with
time for reflection on exploring ways the concepts and practices discussed can be personally applied.
University and clinical faculty will be involved in this program. Practicing superintendents, state policy
makers, and other professionals are active in the program through our “Best Practice Seminars.”
Special education coursework, a requirement for the Connecticut superintendent’s certificate, will be
incorporated throughout the entire program. During the internship component, each student is paired with a
practicing superintendent or head of agency.
