Neag School of Education Development
From 1998 through June of 2004, the University of Connecticut was engaged in a comprehensive campaign that raised over $300 million in private support. Combined with UCONN 2000, the University was able to set one of its goals to become a top 25 school nationally-and it is now well on its way.
The Dean's Advisory Board was established at the Neag School of Education in 2000. This group has been instrumental in guiding the mission of the School as advocates and in opening doors for philanthropic purposes.
The Neag School of Education is indebted to many individuals, private foundations and corporations for their belief and support in our mission. Private gifts have allowed Dean Richard Schwab to establish, with Board of Trustee's approval, three endowed chairs and one endowed professorship. These chairs are in gifted education and talent development; literacy and technology, and special education. An endowed professorship was created in adult learning. The faculty members holding these esteemed positions are internationally known and their work impacts the broad field of education daily.
The Neag School of Education has distinguished itself from many other colleges of education by providing a five year teacher education program . Private gifts have established endowed scholarships and therefore, take some of the financial burden off of our students. Northeast Utilities Foundation gave the School a grant which allowed for scholarships for the Teacher Certification Program for College Graduates. Without that support, we would not have been able to begin a program in Stamford.
Program support is critical to the School as well. Funding has made it possible for our students and faculty to travel to present their research at regional and national conferences.
On October 1st, 2004, the new addition to the Gentry building was dedicated. Some of the costs were offset by donations to the building. Seventeen superintendents established The Superintendents' Seminar Room; John and Carla Klein have a multi-purpose room off the atrium and the NSoE Advisory Board has their named room within the Dean's Suite. A group of alums have begun fund raising for the Alumni Hall off the atrium. (There is still room for your name.)
The Dean's Fund also provides flexibility to assist students when a crisis occurs and to do more outreach in our priority districts. Presently we are in some way involved in 78% of the communities within Connecticut. Our reach does not stop there.
These are only some of the examples of what your donation can mean to the Neag School of Education. The School also has an Alumni Society which brings our alums together for social events-including basketball game watches and pre and post game receptions- and annually recognizes those who have achieved success in their particular discipline. Our publication, Spotlight, often highlights these graduates. We are fortunate that there is so much to tell.
The private funds are held and managed by the University of Connecticut Foundation, Inc. www.foundation.uconn.edu
